The Challenge
The U.S. Air Force faces increasing demands to train Airmen on complex, rapidly evolving technical systems in environments where downtime is not an option. Traditional classroom instruction and video-based content fall short in preparing personnel for high-risk, hands-on scenarios, especially in maintaining next-gen aircraft and systems.
Key challenges include:
Stephen Mayer, a Salt Lake City native, was nurtured in the publishing world by his magazine-running father and developed a fascination for fonts upon receiving a Mac for his family. During his collegiate years, he skipped lectures and gained knowledge about typeface—and life—by working as a designer for his university newspaper.
He also worked independently as a consultant, bridging the gap between typeface creators and users, always championing the needs of both parties. Not only is he the co-founder of the web platforms, Typographica and Fonts In Use, Stephen has also penned a regular column for Print magazine and authored the acclaimed book The Anatomy of Type. In 2017, he became an integral part of the nonprofit library and museum, Letterform Archive, as an Associate Curator and Editorial Director.
Knowledge loss due to workforce transition and retirements
Limited access to subject matter experts for in-person training
High variability in skill proficiency across locations
Inability to scale immersive learning without external contractors or long development timelines
The Air Force needed a scalable, adaptable, and rapidly deployable training platform to capture and distribute real-world knowledge, without pulling experts off the job or requiring extensive VR production teams.

The Solution
Through Phase I and Phase II SBIR awards, followed by a TACFI engagement, Holos partnered with the Air Force to deliver an end-to-end immersive training platform, purpose-built for operational scalability and in-house maintainability.
With Holos, units can now upload instructional materials, including 3D models, videos, training manuals, and other materials, directly to Holos. These are then are transformed into modular training content through an AI-powered, drag-and-drop authoring tool, allowing Airmen to rapidly assemble step-by-step immersive instruction, without needing external vendors or technical expertise.
Once authored, training modules are deployed directly to Apple Vision Pro, enabling high-fidelity, spatially accurate training that can be accessed on-demand at the trainee's own pace.

Our Partnership with Scale AI
To further accelerate training development and broaden its operational impact, Holos partnered with Scale AI under our $1.25M SBIR Phase II contract with Air Force Research Lab. This collaboration brings Scale’s Donovan platform into Holos’ immersive training workflow, allowing instructors to generate courses from existing materials on the shelf, including technical orders, training manuals, and PowerPoints. This dramatically reduces the time and labor required to produce mission-critical training, shifting the burden away from overextended subject matter experts (SMEs) and enabling course creation at the speed of relevance.
Together, Holos and Scale AI are redefining what’s possible for Just-in-Time training and Multi-Capable Airmen. This partnership not only reduces training development time by over 50%, but also enables real-time adaptation to mission demands—empowering the Air Force to deploy up-to-date, hands-on training content at the edge. As immersive technologies and generative AI converge, this collaboration sets a new precedent for readiness, resilience, and innovation in defense training.
